Politics and sports are similar to oil and water. These components should not be intertwined with each other. However, politics has begun seeping into major international events like the Qatar World Cup, Olympics, and Formula One. The banning of Russian Flags, the controversy over hosting the biggest global competition, and the termination of Russian Driver contracts should not be in sports. Unfortunately, the platform to once showcase creativity is now being exploited to highlight political sides, and this must be changed immediately.

Sports is a place to demonstrate an individual’s talent. It is the stage for the great to be noticed and the generational to be remembered. Ronaldo, Messi, Hamilton, Lara, and Federer are just a few names which enter the mind when thinking about superstars. These people did not earn their fame from mentioning political issues. It is their craft, skill, and talent which they effectively showcased in order to become global icons. Many athletes such as Medvedev, Rublev, Mazepin and more are unable to represent their homeland due to international conflicts. Shouldn’t these players be able to wave their flag when winning a gold medal? Conflicts should not be meddling inside this astonishing world of sports. Politics has already disrupted many careers, how many more dreams can it diminish? The moment is now to establish a fine line between these concepts, in order for both politics and sports to develop individually, leading to more global benefit.

Even if sports provides a unique platform to express points, it should not be conducted whilst harming lives. Global issues must be highlighted in these events, but they should not be rupturing a player’s career. Humanitarian issues and climate issues should be exposed in competitions like Wimbledon and Cricket World Cup, but it must not be staged as “political views”. Politics is different from these perplexing issues and sports lovers must be observing the call for action perspective. As 2024 was coined as the year of elections, political viewpoints and campaigns were heavily endorsed in matches and tournaments. This should not be the case whatsoever due to the fact that political ideologies do not align with sports mentalities. For example, the Just Stop Oil program all across Europe has utilized creative methods to spread their campaign. However, disrupting play in Wimbledon finals 2024 has created a negative image, hampering their progress. This effectively necessitates the idea that protests must be operated in a civil manner to ensure that the message is spreading effectively without affecting the game. A perfect example of this occurring is the Humanitarian message to aid those affected in the conflict zone of Gaza, which is being spread across Premier League and Champions League games this season.

Political viewpoints must not be affiliated with sports as it has shown to have a detrimental impact on athletes whilst not changing the global outcome. However, issues impacting on a global scale should be addressed in games. Change is required in this transitioning world, but this shift in ideology must not be dismantling the future of prospective professionals. Sports provide an excellent medium for expressing these aspects, but it should not be exploited for political advantages. Tarnishing careers is not the solution towards bringing systematic change.
