The blissful tournament in Bangladesh, bringing ecstasy to millions each edition. The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is the grandeur of cricket in Bangladesh, highlighting talents and showcasing class of the game in its shortest format. Seven teams gruel it out in a month-long marathon to determine the champion in front of a packed crowd in the famous Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the heart of Mirpur. With three exuberant cities hosting magical matches, Dhaka, Sylhet and Chittagong, the euphoric extravaganza travels all around the country, enabling all to witness this spectacular show. With its rich history and stable future, T20 cricket in Bangladesh can truly develop, escalating cricket to new heights.
BPL’s journey began in 2012, with the dazzling cricket being overshadowed by reports of match fixing, corruption, and monetary controversies. Nonetheless, 33 games commenced amongst 6 teams, with each team playing against the other five teams before having qualifiers, eliminator, and final. Dominant Dhaka Gladiators ran away with the title, with Elias Sunny being the star man for them and taking 17 wickets in the first ever edition. However, the beginning of this fortuitous competition will forever be remembered for the horrid reasons. BPL began expanding the years after, with a 7th team entering in 2013 resulting in 13 more games. Unfortunately, scandals kept on playing in the league and controversies marked the end of the second year. Afterwards, BPL began imposing strict regulations, tightening up the loose screws, which paid dividends as superstars Chris Gayle, AB De Villiers, Kumar Sangakkara, and more arrived at the Bengali blockbuster.
This eruption has embellished the cricketing status of Bangladesh, but this did not necessarily indicate the diversion from honing Bangladeshi talent. Many superstars in the Bangladesh national team, such as Litton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and more have all been nurtured by these franchises. Nowadays, the nations talent all churn through the gruelling tournament, developing a tougher “survival of the fittest” programme. Reputable franchises such as Rangpur Riders, Khulna Tigers, Fortune Barishal, and Sylhet Strikers alongside returners and newcomers Durbar Rajshahi, Dhaka Capitals, and Chittagong Kings all have comprehensive youth talent systems which is developing stars like Parvez Hossain Emon, Jishan Alam, Akbar Ali, and more.
BPL is not just a cricketing competition, it is a major economic factor in the nation as well. With extensive auctions and sponsorship deals, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) earnt 152.5 crore from the 2024 edition of the tournament alone. The budget for the tournament was capped at a stagerring 500 million by the BCB, with Dutch-Bangla Bank being title sponsors for the 2025 edition. What began with a conglomerate company promising just 75 million taka has now skyrocketed to almost 500 million at just the bare minimum limit just a decade later. With the immense economic prosperity on the horizon, BPL is proceeding to expand its shores to major cities all across Bangladesh whilst adhering to sustainability goals, a rare trait in franchise cricket leagues all around the world.
BPL has mesmerized supporters all across the world. From its fairytale final in 2019 with superstar Tamim Iqbal’s sensational 141 runs in 61 balls to diminish juggernauts Dhaka Dominators. The David vs Goliath tale was apparent once more in 2024, with Tamim Iqbal’s Fortune Barishal dismantling Comilla Victorians every over. These memories will forever be instilled in cricket lover’s minds, showcasing the incredible level of cricket being played in the country. With a new generation of talent emerging from Bangladesh and global stars arriving from all corners of the Earth, this local tournament has transformed into a global spectacle, captivating the hearts of millions, with the potential of becoming the leading franchise tournament in a few years time. BPL has not only transcended Bangladesh cricket, but has revolutionized global leagues eternally.
